Pieroth Grosses Gewächs Burg Layer Hölle, Riesling, QbA Nahe
«Pairs excellently with river and sea fish, as well as veal dishes such as saltimbocca.»Serving suggestion, Pieroth catalogue
Germany has had “Erste Gewächse” since 1999, and since 2003 the VDP growers' association has produced “Grosse Gewächse” under its own statutes. The south-facing steep slope has a gradient of 40 to 55%. The soil is characterised by gravelly, sandy loam with larger fragments of quartzite, clay slate, green slate, Stromberg limestone and milky quartz – an ideal terroir for great Rieslings.
After spontaneous fermentation – meaning the fermentation process took place without the addition of cultured yeast – in a large traditional cask, the wine matured for ten months on the fine lees in oak barrels and for at least a further six months in the bottle.
Characteristics
The wine shows elegant fruity aromas and a mineral note. Citrus notes, ripe apricot and flint, rounded off with juicy peach. The acidity is present but very well integrated. A complex yet cleanly structured Riesling with a generous length. A great wine that can be enjoyed now, but which also offers very good potential for further ageing in the future.
Serving suggestion
Pairs excellently with river and sea fish, as well as veal dishes such as saltimbocca.
