Piccolo Angelo IGT Veneto Rosso
«Pairs wonderfully with Italian classics such as pasta al ragù (with meat sauce) or lasagne al forno. Also with grilled or braised meat dishes of any kind, and mature cheeses such as the locally produced Montasio.»Serving suggestion, Pieroth catalogue
The winery – Fratelli Giuliari – was founded in 1960 by the brothers Pietro Carlo and Tiziano Giuliari, 15 km east of Verona, in Illasi, right in the heart of DOCG Valpolicella. In the meantime, the next generation, Tiziano’s son Juri & Pietro Carlo’s son Andrea, has taken over the running of the winery. From the outside, it presents itself, like its owners, in a very understated way and without great fuss. The Giuliaris speak rather modestly about the wines that leave their cellar. But that is entirely unwarranted. The wines are true masterpieces and have therefore won numerous awards and accolades.
Vinification Our Piccolo Angelo – an “Amarone” for every day and every budget. As with its big brother, the grapes – a blend of Corvinone, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot – were harvested exclusively by hand, since damaged grape skins would prevent the “appassimento”, the drying process. The best grapes were then dried for around a month and subsequently aged for several months in wooden barrels previously used for the Amarone Riserva.
Characteristics
The Piccolo Angelo also impresses on the nose with the typical Appassimento notes, a great abundance of aromas, and, thanks to the proportion of international grape varieties, a touch of modernity too. Intense notes of cherry, redcurrant, chocolate and spice. The oak is well integrated and is supported by an elegant acid structure and the alcohol content. Very soft and silky, with long mineral notes in the finish.
