Le Phénix AOC Côtes de Bordeaux
«“Le Phénix” is an ideal companion to hearty meat dishes, game, lamb or mature cheese.»Serving suggestion, Pieroth catalogue
Château Hostens-Picant, home to the impressive wine “Le Phénix”, lies just 24 km from the famous commune of Saint-Emilion and has existed since the 15th century. In 1986, Yves and his wife Nadine Hostens-Picant bought the estate, above all because they recognised the potential of its extraordinary terroir, distinguished by its rich composition of flint, gravel, clay and limestone, which gives the wines an unmistakable character and complexity.
The high quality of “Le Phénix” results from a careful selection of parcels with particularly old vines and extremely limestone-rich soils. The approach of low-yield production combined with hand-picking and entirely manual vinification in wooden casks gives this wine its outstanding class.
Characteristics
After fermentation, the wine matures slowly for over 15 months in new Allier oak casks, after which it can age in bottle for 48 months. “Le Phénix” is the masterpiece and the last self-produced wine of the founder and recently deceased estate owner, Yves Hostens-Picant.
The château's coat of arms, which shows two phoenixes, symbolises Yves's unshakeable character and visionary mindset, and was also his nickname. “Le Phénix” represents the pinnacle of the château's quality pyramid, stands for the utmost craftsmanship and dedication in winemaking, and is dedicated to the life of Yves Hostens-Picant.
