Cirò Classico Superiore Riserva DOC Calabria
«Pairs excellently with Calabrian and Mediterranean cuisine in general, such as pasta with rich tomato sauces, aubergine bake (parmigiana di melanzane) or pizza with spicy toppings.»Serving suggestion, Pieroth catalogue
Cirò Classico Superiore Riserva DOC is made from the Gaglioppo grape, a variety native to Calabria. The region is one of Italy's oldest winegrowing areas, and its wine tradition dates back to the first Greek settlers, when southern Italy was known as Magna Graecia. This wine was once reserved for Olympic athletes, to celebrate their achievements upon returning home.
Characteristics
Complex aromas of red and dark fruits such as cherries, plums and blackberries. Spicy notes of pepper and herbs also emerge, along with subtle hints of tobacco and leather. Full-bodied with good tannin structure. The Riserva ageing, with its longer maturation in barrel and bottle, has additionally brought forth notes of vanilla, cedar and smoke.
Serving suggestion
Pairs excellently with Calabrian and Mediterranean cuisine in general, such as pasta with rich tomato sauces, aubergine bake (parmigiana di melanzane) or pizza with spicy toppings.
