Today the total vineyard area covers around 12,000 hectares. The climate is strongly continental, with annual rainfall of between 450 and 650 mm, and summer temperatures here often climbing to 35°C. The region once had around 60,000 hectares of vineyards, worked by roughly 3,000 growers.
